Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong revealed his delight about the prospect of playing alongside Lionel Messi next season. De Jong was one of the breakout stars of the season guiding Ajax to the domestic treble and leading the team to an unfancied semifinal run in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old had earlier in January agreed a £75 million transfer to Barcelona in the summer and he spoke to the media in the aftermath of Ajax 4-1 victory at De Graafschap.

The game which was De Jong’s last match for the Dutch giants ended in celebration as the club won their first league trophy in five years.

The Holland international after the game revealed that he couldn’t wait to start training and learning with Messi. He also spoke of his love for Ajax and the experience that he has gained during his time at the club.

De Jong is considered as one of the elite centre midfielders in Europe. Blessed with the ability to tackle cleanly and excellent passing ability he has been likened to Sergio Busquets.  He is also good aerially and able to control the tempo of the game by recycling the ball effectively.

He has all the tools to succeed at Barcelona and would be expected to be the long-term replacement for Busquets.

He could also be joined by teammate and club captain Matthijs De Ligt who has been linked with a big money move to Barcelona.

De Jong would be looking to lift another trophy in the summer as the Netherlands face England in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League in June.

It is understandable that De Jong can’t wait to begin training with Messi as the Argentine is considered as one of the greatest players to ever play the game.
